Sodium Bi-Carbonate Blast Cleaning
Soda blasting is much like sand blasting except that it uses a particle that is considerably softer than the sand particle. On a Mohs’ hardness scale Diamond is 10, Sand/Quartz is 7, Plastic media is 4 and Sodium Bicarbonate (Soda) is 2.5. In other words soda is even softer than plastic so in almost all cases it will remove paints, process residues, soot, soils, inks etc. with damaging the substrate. The soda used in soda blasting is almost the same as the baking soda you have in your kitchen. The particle size is larger and is irregularly shaped to improve its ability to blast. In most cases it does not require the special blast suits and special air supply for the operator. Because the material is soft and light weight it does not raise the concerns of collateral damage to other parts in the cleaning area.
